We must confess we are real ‘shoe dogs’ although we are not trying emulate Nike –which wouldn’t be bad all things considered. Anyway, we brought Nike up because its founder, Phil Knight, has just published his memoirs, titled ‘Shoe dog’.
In the book –recommendable for all businessmen- Phil Knight describes a ‘shoe dog’ as a person who devotes their life to designing, manufacturing or selling shoes, and does so with utmost dedication. A ‘shoe dog’ is somebody who has worked really hard all their life in the shoe industry and the only thing they can think about is lasts, insoles, outsoles… shoes.
There are many of us. We are a crowd. And we can recognise each other when we meet.
We go for a walk and can’t help but to make a stop in front of every window shop as long as it displays even just a shoe. We stand and look closely, our mind a whirlwind of possibilities.
When we design a new shoe and the first prototype is out, we take it between our hands with delicacy; we bask in the line of the shoe and slide a finger along the anti-slip outsole. We even smell the shoe as if the scent of polyurethane, rubber or EVA were that of roses; we also check how smooth the upper and the lining are; we press on the anti-fatigue footbed trying to anticipate whether it will be comfortable enough; we bend the shoe to inspect how resistant it is; we examine the finishing, the needlework… every single detail is carefully verified. To us, that shoe is like our baby.
Long story short: we are mad about shoes.
